First successful Somali pirate attack since May 2012 motivated by clan rivalries

The tanker Aris 13 was hijacked 11.2 nautical miles northeast of Bari region, in the autonomous Puntland region, Somalia, at 12:57 hours local time on 13 March, after leaving Djibouti port.

The ship subsequently anchored near Caluula harbour at 19:44. Prior to being hijacked, the ship’s crew reported to the European Union’s NavFor anti-piracy mission that it was being followed by two skiffs. EU NavFor has since reported that its aircraft were monitoring the ship’s position.

According to data from AIS Maritime, the 1,800-deadweight-tonne ship is operated by United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based Aurora Ship Management FZE and owned by the UAE-headquartered and Marshall Islands-registered Armi Shipping SA.
