Kenya’s government has spent over $35m (£26m) on building a 10km (about six miles) wire fence along the border with Somalia to block militant Islamists from crossing over. The reports on the cost of the fencing came to the fore on Wednesday after being tabled in the National Assembly. The funds spent translates to a staggering $3m per kilometer for a fence made of chain link, barbed wire and concrete poles.
Following continued terror attacks in Kenya, the government had announced that it would build a 700km wall along the Somali-Kenya border to limit terror attacks by Al-Shabaab fighters. But when construction began in 2015, there was a fence instead.
