Ilhan Omar is the first Somali-American elected to Congress

Democratic candidate Ilhan Omar is the winner of Minnesota’s 5th congressional district election, making her the first Somali-American elected to Congress.

Omar is Muslim and was largely favored to win the seat in a district that hasn’t had a Republican in Congress since 1962, according to The Hill. Minneapolis is part of the district.

The candidate ran on a platform that pushed criminal justice reform and abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She defeated Republican Jennifer Zielinski and replaces Democrat Keith Ellison.
