An apparent suicide bomber set off a blast outside the main cricket stadium in Kabul on Wednesday, killing at least three people as a match went on inside, authorities said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Sports events have been targeted in the past by militants including the Taliban.
All players and spectators were reported safe. The Interior Ministry said initial reports showed one policeman and two civilians were killed by what was described as a suicide bombing.
The cricket match — involving some international players invited for an exhibition event — resumed after a pause.
“We know the enemy,” said Sediq Sediqqi, head of government’s media and information center, but gave no further details. The Afghan government usually refers to the Taliban and militants based in Pakistan as enemies.
War-torn Afghanistan has earned acclaim in cricket in recent years as an emerging force in international play. In 2015, Afghanistan beat Scotland for its first cricket World Cup win.
